Handforth Gallery
Tacoma native Thomas Handforth was an award-winning artist and illustrator with a globally inspired style. After attending Stadium High and the University of Washington, he studied art in New York and Paris. His travels took him throughout India, Morocco and Mexico eventually landing in China where he developed his distinctive lithography style. Handforth won the notable Caldecott Medal in 1938 for his children’s book, Mei Li.
Since 1952 the Handforth Gallery, at the Main Library, has showcased and celebrated works from local Tacoma artists. The gallery is open to the community and may contain a variety of viewpoints and artistic expressions.
