Main Library’s reopening delayed until late summer 2024 due to supply chain issue

Although the overall process of reimagining Main Library is running smoothly, Main’s construction timeline is being impacted by supply chain issues.

The “glass storefront” that will be used in a number of places (for instance, the new meeting rooms and tenant-partner spaces on the second floor) is on backorder and causing the delay. TPL now estimates a reopening in late August.

“While this delay is unfortunate, we are thrilled with how construction is progressing overall,” stated Director Kate Larsen. “Community members will notice exterior upgrades: fresh paint, new sidewalks, and asphalt make the area more welcoming and accessible. Interior upgrades underway include framing of new workspaces, restrooms, and meeting spaces. Right now, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems are being installed.”

TPL looks forward to sharing the new spaces at Main Library when the downtown flagship library reopens. For the latest updates, check tacomalibrary.org.
