Collaboration in full color: “In Community” painting installed at Moore Library

Visitors to Moore Library will encounter a stunning new piece of artwork on the wall, thanks to a collaboration between local artist Kay Doty and Tacoma residents who collaborated on a large colorful mural called “In Community,” depicting a forest scene with themes of diversity and interconnectedness.

According to the artist’s statement, “the concept of the mural started from the idea of a healthy, diverse community...with trees as the main theme, because a healthy forest community needs trees of all kinds: old trees, young trees, snags (still standing dead trees), tree stumps, nurse logs (dead trees "nursing" new plant life), and trees of different species and types.”

“In Community” was completed in multiple sessions including its start in a Tacoma Public Library program at the Wheelock Library. The project was supported by Tacoma Creates. Doty worked with library patrons, neighbors, and participants in Elements of Education Partners, a nonprofit committed to supporting individuals with disabilities.

Once the painting was complete, it was gifted to Tacoma Public Library and installed at Moore Library. "In Community” is Kay Doty’s first mural. For more information about the artist and their work, visit the artist’s website.
